Giving educators and learners outdoor options to do structured learning such as presentations, group work, or research will increase outdoor use. Exterior spaces shall be designed as flexible and nimble, to be useful with a variety of group sizes and weather conditions in mind. Spaces shall provide durable seating, infrastructure such as Wifi and power, and provide shade where possible, using canopies or mature vegetation. Landscape features that reinforce the connection to nature shall be low-maintenance and drought tolerant.  Learning signage could be created, possibly with QR codes to link to sustainable features and practices.

Presentations

Infrastructure such as Wifi and power shall be provided so that presentations, group work, and research can take advantage of outdoor areas.   A large screen for outdoor movie nights would be beneficial.

Durable Seating

Spaces shall provide durable seating and outdoor furniture that can withstand outdoor use and be easily cleaned.  Tables that function as whiteboards and adjustable increase flexibility and nimbleness making for a more effective learning space.

Shade

Provide shade where possible, using canopies or mature vegetation.  Structures that are durable and easy to maintain or replace are needed.  Light colored shading and  flooring would also be beneficial as it would reduce heat gain.

From the interior, direct connections to the outdoors through overhead doors or other large openings can provide connections to the natural world that encourage the transition between indoors and out.
