Within a campus setup, where multiple buildings create the school facility, a secured perimeter fence or other barrier shall be continuous and allow for high visibility from one side to the other. The main entry or entries shall be easily identified and welcoming but limited to a number that is easily monitored by available staff and can be locked after the morning bell. Clear wayfinding shall be provided for students, visitors, and emergency responders. Campus layouts should have excellent site lines for active supervision of all areas, if possible.
Shrubs on campus are recommended to be no more than 36” high and tree branches shall be at least 7 feet from the ground to allow for visibility through the vegetation. Design teams and grounds maintenance shall implement CPTED (crime prevention through environmental design) best management practices.
