Teachers shall be able to see all students at all times. Restrooms for students shall be directly accessible from classrooms, and consider lower height doors around toilet rooms. Provide visibility within, between, and to outside of classrooms. Focus on openness for space layouts and providing listening capabilities when visual connections are not available. Provide a variety of ways to supervise all children at all times.

Visbility

Allow visibility throughout and between spaces, including into the hallway and outdoors.

Openness

Provide open rooms that are easily observed, yet spatially designated through use of color, materials, or furniture. Allow children to see and be seen with each other as they do their various activities.

Listening

If visibility must be obscured, design spaces so that educators can hear what is happening in a space, such as open toilet rooms that may be separated visually, but not audibly.

Variety

Where possible, provide a visual connection between early childhood classrooms as well for multiple sets of eyes to supervise the spaces.
